Ontario's custom-number route

R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 804, subsection 23(1), distinguishes Ministry-provided decals from a registration number painted on or affixed under subsection 23(4). This product is for the custom painted-on or affixed route; it is not represented as a Ministry-issued decal.

Finished dimensions and character form

Subsection 23(4) states that a custom number is 5.0-7.6 cm high, uses a 5-13 mm stroke, and has digits of uniform style and height. Where practicable, spaces between digits are not more than 5 cm. The live 50.8 mm and 76 mm height options sit inside that published range.

Cowling placement and contrast

The custom number is displayed on both sides of the cowling. Its rear limit is at least 10 cm and not more than 15 cm from the rear of the cowling, and its colour contrasts with the background. Reflective material is an optional product choice; it does not replace the contrast requirement.

Section 24 places any validation device on the left cowling between the registration number and the rear of the cowling. Leave that area clear. The tunnel exception in subsection 23(3) is written for Ministry-provided decals, not for the custom-number route in subsection 23(4).
